The Challenge of Handling Ground Protection Mats

Ground protection mats play an essential role across construction and infrastructure projects. They allow machinery and vehicles to operate on soft ground, protect sensitive surfaces and help maintain access across difficult terrain.


However, once these mats need to be moved, repositioned or stored, operators often face a familiar problem. Unlike palletised loads, ground protection mats are large, awkward and difficult to stabilise during transport. Their dimensions can create movement during lifting and travelling, particularly when operating across uneven surfaces or busy worksites.

Rather than creating a universal attachment intended to suit every possible application, the objective was to develop a practical and reliable solution focused on improving the transport of ground protection mats directly from the forklift carriage.


Designed and manufactured in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, Klatch reflects Wheatway Solutions' approach to product development: identify a real-world problem. Every Klatch attachment is designed, engineered and manufactured in-house at the company's Gloucestershire facility, allowing complete control over quality, production standards and ongoing product development.


The result is a fork clamp system designed to improve load stability, increase operator confidence and create a more controlled handling process from pick-up through to placement.


Designed Around the Forklift

One of the most important aspects of the Klatch range is that it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Different forklift classes have different carriage dimensions, lifting capacities and operating requirements. To ensure optimum compatibility and performance, Klatch has been developed across multiple dedicated models.


The FG2 range is designed for ITA/FEM Class II forklifts, typically operating in the 1–2.5 tonne capacity range. The FG3 range supports Class III forklifts, while the larger FG4 range is intended for Class IV machines used in heavier-duty industrial applications.


By matching the attachment to the correct forklift class, operators benefit from a secure fit, reliable operation and improved handling performance without compromise. As projects demand greater efficiency, improved safety and better utilisation of equipment, specialist handling solutions will continue to play an increasingly important role.
